Representing businesses in disputes at all levels, Joseph R. Knight offers 25 years of big-firm experience with lower rates and more personal attention. Mr. Knight served as lead counsel in state and federal district courts on a wide spectrum of commercial disputes. He has handled numerous high-stakes appeals, presenting oral argument to the Texas Supreme Court, Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, and most Texas intermediate appellate courts. He has frequently taken on the Texas Attorney General's Office, either in court or across the negotiating table. Mr. Knight practiced at Baker Botts LLP from 1991 through 2014, where he served as both the head of the Austin litigation department and the partner in charge of the Austin office.

Representative Experience*

  • Secured Texas Supreme Court judgment reversing tax liability of a housing authority for supporting officially-sponsored summer programs at a major Texas university, Texas Student Housing Auth. v. Brazos County Appraisal District, 460 S.W.3d 137 (Tex. 2015)
  • Defended and negotiated settlements of Texas Attorney General Medicaid fraud investigations on behalf of numerous pharmaceutical companies
  • Enjoined Texas Health and Human Services Commission from barring a drug manufacturer from the Texas Medicaid program pending appeal of judgment under the Medicaid Fraud Prevention Act
  • Obtained dismissal of multi-count federal lawsuit against numerous Houston-area real estate brokerages and secured affirmance in the Fifth Circuit, Real Estate Innovations, Inc. v. Houston Assoc. of Realtors et al., No. 09-20868 (5th Cir. 2011) (per curiam)
  • Obtained court of appeals judgment vindicating city's right to prevent county from constructing an international bridge within city limits, City of Laredo v. Webb County, 220 S.W.3d 571 (Tex. App.—Austin, 2007 no pet.)
  • Secured reversal of $32 million judgment in highly-publicized mold case, Allison v. Fire Ins. Exchange, 98 S.W.3d 227 (Tex. App.—Austin, 2002)
